Under Attack II: Kill Chain, by David Alexander

Some boast of stories torn from today's headlines. David Alexander may justly boast of a thriller ripped from tomorrow's. That thriller is Under Attack II: Kill Chain.
David Alexander has penned a novel that's the next wave of riveting global action thrills and high-tech warfare.

Throughout the world and domestically, war again threatens America and sparks military retaliation. US forces meet the new challenges posed by a terrorist nation state with advanced technology and special warfare operations.
The nation's adversaries are planning a bold new series of terrorist strikes against high-priority military, civilian, government and commercial targets in the American homeland and around the world.
Yet there are a number of twists this time around. Many of these targets are unconventional focal points of attack, while the methods of attack themselves are totally unexpected, as are their intended consequences.

Kill Chain is a new page-turner by the most widely read thriller author in the US, UK, AU and Canada. It's full of surprises ... it is also a warning of what might happen tomorrow if America and its allies grow careless again. David Alexander -- dubbed "the best damn action writer in the business" -- has a gift for extrapolating tomorrow's history from today's events.

No Punches Pulled
Non-state armies are now in the Maghreb, straddling the Med and directly across Europe's southern tier where they have built growing desert havens. Flush with armaments bought with stolen oil revenues they are in a position to threaten NATO member nations.

A multilateral, combined arms assault on heavily defended strike points in the Maghreb is staged. Terrorists have already amputated the limbs and cut heads off prisoners. The raid is staged by an elite force, but it's badly botched. Hostages die in the course of hot extraction, choppers go down and many of the rescue force are killed. But this is not just about war, it's also about sales. Giant multinational defense contractors in the US and EU are closely watching the combat theater and corporate observers are studying the results.

The new defense secretary's first move is to cut programs he considers obsolete. As soon as he announces his intentions he's visited by key senators from affected states who swear to fight the cuts. The secdef's enemies conspire to set him up, beginning the first stage of a plot whose end result is to be the death of the US president and the occupation of the American republic.

Force Omega, the future soldier infantry brigade specially equipped and trained for multipurpose missions, is tasked with a range of global operations in support of the NATO mission. At squad and company levels, Omega can be deployed in any variety of roles and used as a rapid, mobile strike formation.

TAKES UP THE STORY
By Burke Rausch
Having read Under Attack and awaited a sequel, or at least a continuation of the themes originally set forth in the book, I am very happy to say that Under Attack II: Kill Chain is everything and more than I expected. This story takes the general themes of global military conflict and attacks on homeland America and makes something new of them.

There are continuing characters, such as former Colonel (now General) Stone Breaux, and the nation's capital is still a target of terrorism, but much else has changed, including a new president, who like his predecessor, becomes the target of assassination. Here, however, everything seems painted on a much larger canvas, for this is an epic on a larger scale.

Although we can recognize many features of today's battles against terrorists who have taken over failed states and hatch plans to export terror abroad, the setting of Kill Chain is different in general than our contemporary experience, yet it is in its particulars very much a mirror image of it. My impression is that it was written this way in order to preserve the freshness of its story and impact of its concept as time passes and new actors take the world stage. Under Attack certainly was written in this way, which is one reason I think the thriller will continue gaining momentum over time.

All of these things make Under Attack II: Kill Chain a refreshingly good military and action-adventure story. It's authentic yet constantly pushes the limits of the thriller so you never can be sure what will happen next. While it's well versed in military weapons and the tactical arts, it is also cutting edge in its treatment of unconventional types of warfare such as cyber war, a feature that's central to its plot. This was a thriller that was a pleasure to read, a balanced blend of fact and fancy wrapped up in a riveting package.

Cyber Attack on America
By jeffrey lipko
Hacker attack themes in techno thrillers may gain momentum as these continue to make headlines. In Kill Chain, author David Alexander has written an ambitious thriller in which the cloud comes physically under attack to create large scale havoc that includes denying us the use of much of our military systems.

However, the computer, internet and robotic angles are also skillfully manipulated to create weapons of mass destruction, so this thriller involves far more than just hacking and wrecking. The plot of Kill Chain gets involved at times, but I felt this was okay because the plot was also very involving to me. It was also appropriate in order to tell this "big" story, with its focus on a plot by resurgent nazis to turn the U.S. into a 21st century fourth Reich.

There was always very tight continuity between all of its chapters so I never felt like I was losing track and I always had a clear image of what was going on in my mind's eye as the story continued to unfold.

USA Under Attack
By Nick "Pugsly" Jones
Here again, as in Under Attack (which I've also read and found impressive) we're given a glimpse into warfare apocalypse in which the latest weapons and technology of war are displayed like a hardware expo, while a terrorist threat looms like a deadly tide threatening to sweep over the United States. The terrorists here are actually an army like Isis, a very large and well coordinated group of nasties who see civilization as their major enemy and who want to trash it all in order to set up a postmodern state based on warlordism and going back in time a thousand years or so.

They are well organized, however, and have at their disposal some pretty awesome types of weapons with which to strike at their targets. The plan of attack is well coordinated, and it's well plotted as fiction, with what I personally think are a number of unexpected and startling twists in a fast moving and suspenseful plot that kept me on my toes and guessing at what might happen next.

The story, which did indeed feature a great deal of technical detail, was primarily built on the basis of plot and the nicely complex interactions of the many characters in it. It's the plot and the characters as much as all the excellent weapons and tech descriptions that actually make this book throw fire. I was impressed by Under Attack II and I think I have good reason to suggest it to other readers of thrillers of its kind.
