Readable But Not Particularly Memorable

A young writer becomes tutor to the son and daughter of a wealthy but querulous and eccentric old man. Naturally the tutor falls in love with the daughter, but mysteries and menace surround on all sides, from the mute and hostile butler, to the sleepwalking son, to the spectre of the White Prior who seems to be haunting the abandoned wing. A readable but not particularly memorable mystery with a Gothic mood; Fergus Hume, though prolific, seems to have been in the second or third tier of talent among mystery writers of the late Victorian era, and neither the characters (except for the butler) or the descriptions are particularly vivid. Some better novels of this genre, from the same publisher and at a similar low price, are The Coombsberrow Mystery by James Colwell and Morag the Seal by J.W. Brodie-Innes.
