MARTIN J DOUGHERTY is Director of Coaching to the All-Styles Martial Arts Association and a Senior Assessor with the Self-Defense Federation, holding black belts in two styles of Ju-Jitsu as well as self-defense. His martial arts career has encompassed ju-jitsu, kickboxing and self-defense as well as military combative systems. Martin has worked in the defense and security industry, where he is an expert on weapon systems and asymmetric conflict.

A fantastic practical guide for anyone seeking some basic but effective combat skills that work.

This short 48 page (How to Defend Yourself: Unarmed combat skills that work by Martin J. Dougherty) manual is a good basic guide for anyone seeking some practical and effective self-defense techniques and tactics. The price including S/A was $9.31 for this small manual; however, it does pack a lot of solid information within its pages. One of the things I really like about this manual is that the illustrations are beautifully drawn which makes it easy to follow the instructions. Another thing I love about this manual is how it sticks to teaching pure self-defense techniques and does not go into any traditional martial art techniques.
This book was published in the London, England so some of the spellings may be a little different. Also, some of their advice relate to their laws and philosophy of self-defense are a little different. Nevertheless, most of the information is valid and helpful for anyone seeking some practical self-protection skills.
Some of the material covered in this manual includes the following: target and vulnerable points, effective self-defense, the fence posture, combat stance and movement, the punch threat, the grab threat, pushing techniques. defense against punches, grabs, wrist grabs, strangles, pre-emptive hits, stomp kick or knee strike and what to do if you get knocked down.
This book is a perfect example of the saying "good things come in small packages." Keep in mind that no matter how good a book is on defensive tactics, it can never take the place of getting a hands-on course by a certified combatives instructor. This volume when used with training under a combatives instructor is a great combination.
