Sunspot, by Rob Leininger

The sunspot was huge. Nothing like it had ever been seen before---a twenty-billion square mile blot on the surface of the sun, and growing. Dr. Morris Tyler at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff has a theory that might explain what's happening, and the news isn't good. Which is why he's under surveillance after having been told to keep his theory to himself. Keeping his theory under wraps isn't easy, not when a gorgeous reporter for Parsec magazine, Gail Dionne, has him in her sights, out to get a story. Tyler's well-ordered world spins out of control when all these forces converge on him, and the world begins to grow colder as the sun . . . goes . . . out.

Good, but could have been so much better...
By Option61c
First, and because I came to this book via Kindle Unlimited it is necessary to comment on something that even ten years ago would never be part of a book review...The quality of the writing itself. I'm happy to report this book is well written and competently edited. The writing style is enjoyable and the author knows how to structure a chapter.

The main premise of the book is fascinating and original. Having been an amateur astronomer for 40+ years, the concept of the Tyler Cycle grabbed me immediately. I also enjoyed the authors take on what the government allows scientists to say to the public, especially when the science conflicts with policy.

The are a few areas where the story falls short of being excellent. The first is the overblown romance between the the two main characters. After a while it became far too Harlequinesque. I just wanted them to stop talking about it and get it over with.

Another problem is with the Harry character. He takes up so much of the story, but we never find out why he is the way he is. As he's written, he's little more than a cardboard cutout with the word scumbag written on the front.

Finally, the story should have delved into the "shadow government" aspect more. It was only lightly brought up and could really have added much to the book.

On the whole I recommend this book. It has many inventive and (at least to me) original story elements.

Don't Blink! It could be a disaster of epic proportions!
By Al Campo, Author of THE FUNNY THING ABOUT WAR
A truly engaging doomsday novel, in the style reminiscent of Michael Crichton wherein the science of physics and theories of sociology are artfully woven together. Mr. Leininger has vividly portrayed an apocalytic event caused by the proliferation of massive magnetic storms on the sun, better known as sunspots, and the ensuing madness such a cataclysm would create.

It is a briskly paced tale involving a brilliant guitar strumming, astrophysicist and professor named Morris Kendall Tyler and a beautiful magazine reporter named Gail Dionne who become pitted against forces seeking to avert an overall panic by censoring the knowledge 'Tyler' has of the sun cooling down.

It is apparent that Mr. Leininger has clearly done his research about the sun and the workings thereof. He goes into great depths about the thermodynamics involved as well as the terminology employed in the scientific study of the sun, much of which surpassed this reader's knowledge of by volumes, yet he made it interesting and relevant to the story. His characters are well developed and the dialogue is crisp and smart.

I highly recommend this book to any and all interested in science fiction thrillers. In particular, I believe fans of Crichton and Cussler (which I am) would find this book to be a most entertaining read and the equivalent of anything written by them.

Well written Apocalyptic Story
By M. Shaw
This book was originally published in 1991 by Avon.

It's an apocalyptic tale about a natural disaster, with our Sun basically "turning off" for a period of time. It turns out the sun is actually a variable star and is not quite as stable as believed by all except the hero of the story.

I originally read the book when first published and liked it very much, and in fact still have a copy on my bookshelf. And I still do like it very much.

Well worth the price, and my highest recommendation.
