Enjoyable

Just finished reading and enjoyed it well enough to purchase the next one. It was a light, paranormal (she sees dead people), murder mystery. Based on the title, you might expect a lot of humor, but even the drag queen is treated as just part of the interesting background of New Orleans and not as comic relief. I'd recommend it for a light read.

Unique and Entertaining

A Mansion, A Drag Queen, and a New Job hooked with me with the title alone. Add in a cool cover, and a great synopsis and there is definitely the makings of a very interesting mystery story. What disappointed me was, with such a creative title, there was a lack of humor within the pages. Sure, there are a few funny things but nothing really belly laugh worthy. I guess I just expected more humor outside of the tragic mystery.
The novel starts off pretty slowly - Deanna, a psychic with a PhD under her belt, is headed to New Orleans for a job interview and along the way gets enveloped in the estate of a grandmother she never knew. While waiting for specifics, Deanna learns that she received her abilities from this particular grandmother, who just happens to pop in now and again throughout the story to assist Deanna. After it's confirmed that Deanna inherits everything, including the mansion complete with drag queen, she discovers that the granddaughter of the cab driver who brought her to the mansion the first day, has been murdered. She just has to convince the local authorities that's she legit and can help with the case.
What Deanna doesn't count on is the twists and turns of the events that unfold with the case. Thinking it's going to be an isolated case, Deanna realizes that there will be more deaths unless the police can capture the maniac responsible. Armed with a passel of ghosts, a dramatic drag queen, a former priest, a judge, and a community that actually supports her, Deanna does the best she can to solve the case before anyone else, including herself, get hurt. Once Deanna gets her bearings and commits to assisting in finding the murderer, the pace picks up and the story unfolds.
I really enjoyed A Mansion, A Drag Queen, and a New Job. The story was quite unique and entertaining. I found it to be a quick and easy read and was able to finish the book in a little over a day - in between adult responsibilities. I'm not particularly fond of Greg as a romantic interest of Deanna and would really like to see more interaction between Deanna and the judge. Even the way
the scenes with each duo were written seem indicative of how relationships may go in this series. Of course, that doesn't mean much since it's only book one and Deanna isn't quite in relationship mode at this point.
I can't wait to move on to Book 2: A Club, An Imposter and A Competition

A Fun Story - Needed Some Touch-Ups

A Mansion, A Drag Queen, and A New Job is the first book in C.C. Dragon‘s Deanna Oscar Paranormal Mystery series. This paranormal mystery read like a cozy and was an overall fun read.
A Mansion, A Drag Queen, and A New Job started out a bit slow, but picked up into a nice and enjoyable read. Deanna Oscar was a lovable character that always seemed to remain true to herself, if a bit confused about what exactly that meant at times. With a fantastic cast of secondary characters always mixing things up it was a great introduction into the world and series. Being set in New Orleans added a special something to the story, as only NOLA can do and in A Mansion, A Drag Queen, and A New Job it was a nice fit.
The mystery was well played out and fit nicely into the story and setting. The downside to this title is that it needs a good run through with a detailed oriented editor. Several things (typos, punctuation) distracted from the flow of the story that are truly easy fixes and I am not nit-picky or sensitive about these issues.
I rate A Mansion, A Drag Queen, and A New Job 3.5 out of 5 Bullets~
