A remarkable story by a truly amazing woman

I must admit that it has been ages since I sat down a read a good book. However, once I opened this book it brought back memories of my Mississippi roots. As someone who lived next to fighting neighbors and played with the children of these dysfunctional families, I could relate to the author's experience. As a male I have had friends that were abusers and seen women time and time again run back to these men knowing their fate. Ms. Cross was truly blessed as she listened to those around her that her spiritual guide had sent into her life, This book is an excellent guide to someone out there that is looking to break away from destructive behaviors such as bad relationships, chemical dependency etc. As the book is so amply named, its about "Getting Honest". It is then that changes will begin to take place in your life if you truly want help and is willing to do the hard work. It is not an easy road but Ms. Cross has pointed you in the right direction, Great Job, Ms. Cross,,I'm positive that someone's life will change because of you...

Her story is the awful truth of what it was like for African-Americans growing up in the south

This book was incredible. It was not what I thought it would be. Her story is the awful truth of what it was like for African-Americans growing up in the south. Many of her recollections shocked me and I found it hard to believe that anyone could be treated that way. Her life is about perseverance ,determination and overcoming enormous obstacles. It is a great read and I could barely put it down. I highly recommend this book.

Ms. Cross has written a story of survival and heroism. She survived many difficult things and she represents the resilience of the human spirit. Although she gives ample credit to those who inspired her along the way, she is the real hero of the story. She never stopped seeking a full life, and she never stopped helping others find their own way in the middle of whatever they struggle with. Her story is a witness to the powerful way that God is active in the lives of people. Her story can inspire us to listen to everyone we meet to hear their stories and discover how God has been part of their struggles for salvation. James Poling
