Wm. (Wilhelmina) Penn was a weekly columnist for the English language editions of both the Asahi and Yomiuri newspapers for many years before her conversion to e-books. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., she arrived in Japan in 1973.

A wonderful tale about Sapporo, its history, and the people living here.

Wm. (short for Wilhelmina) Penn’s “Saturdays in Sapporo” is a gem of a read. Having met each other in Yokohama, retired Pittsburgher Irving Burns and recently married and pregnant Innocence Blake are astonished to find each other living in Sapporo. As Irving and his wife Keiko show Innocence around the city, its history and culture, they help her adjust to the idea of making Sapporo her home. Wm. Penn knows this story well, having spent the past 40+ years in Japan and Sapporo.
Not only is this a well-told and very enjoyable tale, it is an ideal book for travelers to Sapporo and for ex-pats who are learning the ropes of living here without sticking out too much like sore thumbs. Sapporo is not like Tokyo, Yokohama or Kobe; Sapporo is very different. I’m recommending it to family and friends as a way of getting to know why I like this place as much as i do.

New city, new stage of life

By pure coincidence, Irving and Innocence begin new stages of their lives in the very same city of Sapporo, Hokkaido, and pick up their friendship where it left off at the end of the second book in the series. The author obviously has a great affection for Japan's northernmost prefecture, and depicts the seasons, festivals, and landmarks of Sapporo in great detail.
Through Irving, the author explores issues related to growing old in Japan, and through Innocence, she explores issues related to starting a family far from one's own parents and place of birth. In fact, family seems to be a major theme in this volume, evident in the long section about Irving's ancestors, and in how Irving and his wife fill a parental role for Innocence as the baby's due date draws near.

Penn has created a delightful read highlighting the intricacies of Japanese culture, both traditional and modern, through the eyes of foreigners (Irving and Innocence) living in Japan. The books leading up to this one are also fun reads (Thursdays in Yokohama & Fridays in Kamakura).
