As an adult, nature has continued to inform her personal and professional endeavors. Dayna received a BS in marine biology from New College in Sarasota, Florida. I love it!

I got this to be used with the Biomimicry masters program through Arizona State, but I think it'd be great on its own. It's not often I have trouble putting down a textbook but this is one that I've just fallen in love with! I also love the binding that they've chosen. It's perfect!

spectrum of knowledge

For a long time I gather materials about Foresight Methodologies to my planned publication. There are few books that cover this subject extensively. Typically, authors of studies to focus attention on one selected method. Therefore, my expectations regarding to the collective work edited by Maria Giaoutzi, Bartolomeo Sapio were sizable.

"Recent Developments in Foresight Methodologies" consists of 18 articles written by different authors. The whole is organized in four parts. From theory to practical applications. To me the most interesting articles are:
"Classification of Tools and Approaches Applicable in Foresight Studies" by Jan Erik Karlsen and Hanne Karlsen. Interesting discussion on the nature of foeresight methodologies, with particular emphasis on ontological and epsitemological assumptions.
"New Emerging Issues and Future as Wild Cards Shakers and Shapers" by Victor van Rij. Great, vividly written article about the importance of wild cards.
"Forms of Reasoning in Pattern Management and in Strategic Intelligence" by Tuomo Kuosa. Tuomo is an expert with a passion and talent, and all the text I read with great interest.
"Scenario Planning as a Tool in Foresight Exercises: The LIPSOR Approach" by Anastasia Stratigea and Maria Giaoutzi. A wonderful example of the application of morphological methods developed by Michael Godet.

Each article brings significant value to the foresight methodologies. I miss just one. Articles in the section containing the practical application of foresight methodologies emphasize attention to the development of regions. I'm interested in more use of Foresight Methodologies in business. But this does not detract from the value of "Recent Developments in Foresight Methodologies". I highly and sincerely recommend.

is a wonderful book for those who have traveled India's roads

Idlis, Chai...is a wonderful book for those who have traveled India's roads. It provides fascinating insights for those who want to learn more about this place with a plethora of pan-Indian occurrences that are intriguing to go through. Written simply, there is a genuineness about these tales that one can easily relate to, and the author's experiences as she recollects various episodes in her life make you want to laugh, exclaim, sympathize and enjoy with her all at the same time. Be it a movie that you would remember watching as vividly as she does, or an appalling account of a sugarcane juice seller seen through the eyes of a common man, this book has a bit of 'something' for everyone. If you're looking for a relaxing, light read, this is a good choice!

The Boys Unleashed

Known mostly for his guerrilla film-making alongside Jason Impey, Wade Radford is a writer as well, having penned some poetry collections as well as fiction. In Tales From The Boys Behind Bars, Radford takes some characters from his Boys Behind Bars movies, (as well as some fresh meat), and goes places that at times defies description. Each chapter basically covers one of the inmates at HMYOI Baker's-Ludge Youth Offeners Institute, and the further you delve into the novella length book, the more depraved, porographic, and vile the behavior of said inmates becomes.

Those who are familiar with Radford's movies may think they know what to expect...but you would be wrong. There's so much vileness and depravity it's almost overkill, yet the author makes it work. Those who are easily offended should probably stay away, and if you aren't familiar with the Boys Behind Bars films, the setting and behaviors may seem unreal. Tales From The Boys Behind Bars is a worthy addition to any collection, and a nice little bit of background on some of our favorite characters.

While the layout is a bit off, and it could use an edit, Radford makes us forget those with the sheer audacity of his imagination.

Great tasting bread in ONE HOUR - Its true!

Ahh, bread - the one thing I really miss since starting on my Gluten Free diet. Well - not anymore! The bread recipes out of this book are great and take no time at all to make!

I made bread in my bread machine in a hour, start to finish, and it tasted better than anything I've ever bought at the store. The bread machine is sooo easy, just put in the ingredients and hit start. I'm even using a cheap-o bread machine from a discount store so don't worry about having some big fancy model - that cheap ones work great!

Has recipes for all sorts of different breads (so far the Cinnamon Raisin and the Maple Oat are my favorite) and there is a whole section on ingredients, techniques and trouble-shooting. WOHO, I'm not spending crazy amounts of money at the store now for Gluten Free breads that don't taste like anything and feel like a brick. Now I'm making my own inexpensive, light, fluffy, supper-tasting breads that require almost NO WORK because I'm using a bread machine.

Fantastic Gluten Free Bread

I can't say enough good things about this book. The recipes make bread in a bread machine that comes out looking, smelling, and tasting just like "real" bread.

My nephew has been diagnosed with celiac disease and I have been trying to adapt recipes to accomodate him. The one thing that has stumped me is bread. Store bought gluten free breads are obscenely expensive.

I made the brown rice bread, the first in the book, immediately after downloading this book and was knocked out of the water by the texture, taste, smell, and ease of recipe.

I toasted it for some corned beef that I had made out of tri tips, dressed it with a little yellow mustard and pickles. I can't wait to try it as a reuben.

I have my own flour mill that is dedicated to being gluten free so I am able to customize my flours and this is going to be a great adventure.

The author also has a fantastic website as well that is jam packed with gluten free information.

Great recipes for smaller machines as well as large

These are great recipes, even in a small machine. I use a Zojirushi BB-HAC10 Home Bakery Programmable Mini Breadmaker, and was delighted to see that Addis gives instructions for adapting recipes. Though my Zojirushi's quick bread cycle takes two hours and her recipes are for machines with one-hour cycles, they still work just fine. My favorites include the maple oat bread (which I make with agave syrup) and the Italian Dried Tomato Bread - though the multi-grain bread is really good too, and I haven't tried a recipe I didn't like.

These recipes do use eggs, and for one-loaf machines the instructions call for using 2 eggs instead of 3 along with half the other ingredients). The result is a bread with a slight custardy texture, though not annoyingly so, and a great taste - even my husband, who isn't on a gluten-free diet, agrees. The loaves are a bit smaller than others I've made in my machine, probably due to the use of instant yeast. It's still some of the best bread I've had in the almost 20 years I've been gluten-free.

The ingredients may require a bit of shopping (online for me, despite my fairly well stocked gluten free pantry). Addis's basic bread flour recipe calls for both soy flour and coconut flour, along with the brown and white rice flours and tapioca starch I always have on hand, and she uses SAF instant yeast and dough enhancer, also new ingredients for me. But the results are well worth it. There are a lot of really appealing recipes in the book - cinnamon or pecan raisin, cheddar cheese, buttermilk onion, Welsh currant, and savory bacon pepper loaf, along with the maple oat and Italian dried tomato and multi-grain breads that are my favorites. After taking years to find recipes to make the simplest kind of edible bread, I'm really looking forward to having a lot of fun with this cookbook, baking some really interesting savory breads at last!

P.S. I ordered a copy to give a nephew on a gluten-free diet, and was happy to see that it now comes with a spiral binding, so it will lie flat on its own - much easier to use.

Take the sensuous, fecund New Orleans setting, add a generous helping of tangled Southern family history, and season liberally with a sensitive teenage boy rejected by his friends and frightened of his own homoerotic impulses and you wouldn't be surprised to discover that the novel containing all of the above was written by someone named Rice. But a few paragraphs into the first page, it's clear that Anne Rice's son's first novel isn't about vampires or witches and does not otherwise read like one of her exceedingly popular books. The only family resemblance is in the setting, the sexual orientation of the lovingly described male characters, and the scent of overripe magnolias.

There's murder, suicide, and madness at the heart of this rather clumsy coming-of-age story, which focuses on the youthful friendship of Stephen Conlin, Meredith Ducote, Greg Darby, and Brandon Charbonnet. This friendship is destroyed by a sexual incident that takes place just before the foursome enters Cannon, an exclusive prep school. There, Stephen is ostracized by his former friends, now the most popular kids on campus, who'd just as soon forget their own complicity in the event. Envy, passion, and rage drive the narrative, but the emotions are as juvenile as the characters, and the long passages depicting the rituals and cruelties of high school, from pep rallies to football games, slow down the pace without really illuminating character or motivation. The tangle of a plot grows weedlike when former childhood friends enter high school and find their loyalties have dramatically shifted. Popular, budding bulimic Meredith Ducote is a closet alcoholic whose diaries brim with morose aphorisms on her wretched life; Greg Darby and Brandon Charbonnet are boisterously homophobic high school jocks; and Stephen Conlin, whose father committed suicide, is the sensitive homosexual boy who quickly becomes the victim of cruelty and derision from the school's popular crowd, led by Greg and Brandon. But the two bullies are covering up a painful childhood secret in their persecution of Stephen, a secret Meredith knows. Before the novel reveals this secret during the overwrought climax set during a devastating hurricane, one character dies, another has an emotional breakdown, a parent is institutionalized, a gay bar is bombed by a militant hate group, a concealed paternity is discovered and several families are broken up. Rice is sensitive to the emotional undercurrents that compel teenagers to both mask and wallow in their intense feeling, but the atmosphere of juvenile angst that pervades the novel is as gluey and suffocating as a hot summer on the bayou. 20-city author tour. Anne Rice's son's first novel is a gothic, filled with looming buildings, fiercely guarded secrets, and tormented characters. It opens in a graveyard with four friends playing hide-and-seek. When these four friends (Meredith, Stephen, Brandon, and Greg) enter high school, their relationships change drastically. Now football players, Brandon and Greg ostracize and ridicule Stephen for being gay. Meredith allies herself with the popular crowd and begins dating Greg. Their world is jarred again when Greg's younger brother Alex is killed, and Greg commits suicide. From this point, the story jumps ahead five years, as Jordan, Brandon's older brother, returns home and tries to find out what happened to Brandon, who was sent away from home shortly after Greg's suicide. In his quest to find out what happened to his brother, Jordan discovers more about this huge cast of characters than he bargained for. From this point, the narrative really takes off as the characters are forced to deal with each other and with their own inner demons. Although the gothic gloom is a little heavy for the high-school scenes, the torments Stephen is forced to endure at the hands of his former friends are painfully realistic. That the author's parents are both writers (father Stan is a poet) will generate interest in this novel, but its originality and merits stand on their own. Kristine Huntley

Talent runs in the family

Remember how you felt the first time you read "Interview With The Vampire"? Remember how you were torn between staying up all night to finish it, or savoring it slowly so you would have those wonderful characters and images in your head for as long as possible? That's what I remember reading Anne Rice's book for the first time all those years ago. There have been few books since then that have drawn me in so completely, and how wonderful that the latest one to do that was written by Anne's son, Christopher.
"Unsuspecting" customers will see the gothic cover and the huge RICE name on the jacket and think they are getting a supernatural thriller along the lines of Mama Rice. At first, it seems like that is the case--and there are touches of it in the novel--but these bits of otherworldly business are just some of the many New Orleans touches that make THE CITY as much a character as the four lead characters. Stephen, Brandon, Meredith and Greg are a close group of friends until a shared incident occurs just prior to them entering high school. While the other three become popular, Stephen is hounded and is made miserable simply because he is, in the teenage world, something worse than vampire, witch or werewolf: a homosexual.
Oh, but Mr. Rice doesn't stop there--a huge supporting cast of well-drawn characters all play vital roles. For once, the parents also have juicy history and scenes. Everyone gets resolution or retribution. While he may not have his mother's knack for swoony prose (maybe NOT such a bad thing), he has a style all his own, and he certainly inherited her ability of lending a cinematic feel to his words. It's quite appropriate that this book was published by Miramax. I wouldn't be surprised if the movie rights haven't already been secured. I'm casting my vote right now for Kim Basinger and Ryan Phillipe for the plum roles of the mother and son team of Monica and Stephen! I do wonder if the current crop of young actors would be willing to play the gay sex scenes...and there are a LOT of them! It seems Christopher inherited his mother's talent for writing erotica too....But don't read the book for JUST that. It's the story that reels you in. Some of the action moves at such a heady pace, I felt my head swoon and had to re-read passages. And some I had to re-read just for the sheer beauty of the prose.
I highly recommend this book. I hope he he is working on his next story! (Oh in case you are wondering--I was greedy; I finished in one night!)

Southern Gothic At Its Best

Evocative, lush, sexy, mysterious, violent, scandalous. These adjectives describe not only New Orleans but the characters and their stories which Christopher Rice has brought to life. The story opens with Stephen, Greg, Brandon, and Meredith. The overripe Lafayette Cemetery is the setting. They are innocent children, but not for long. Rice shows us that the truth, in fact, is that the friendship bonds we make in our childhood shape us through our entire lives. An event takes place between these friends that forever change the paths their lives take as they enter their adolescence. Homosexuality, crimes against humanity, alcoholism, domestic violence, and suicide are just as much main characters as the four friends. How they entwine together is one of the most mesmerizing, page-turning stories that I have ever read. During Part III of the book, a hurricane hits New Orleans . . . what a perfect climax . . .as a malestrom of emotions and secrets play out amongst the characters, shocking secrets are revealed. Not only are the homes and waterways tossed about; so are the lives of Rice's main characters. The reader is drawn into the story throughout but in the end, it's incredible. The outcome is simply shocking.
I'd love to see this book brought to the big screen. I also hope to see a new release by Christopher Rice very soon.

Nothing Dense About Density!

Lucky enough to get my hands on an advanced copy of Christopher Rice's first novel, I couldn't wait for it to be released so I could share my thoughts with upcoming readers. Rice starts out a little too poetic, and I feared he was forever trapped in the footsteps of his mother. Anne's work is beatifully written, but often too absorbed in its detail and straying from plot. Chris gives all that up quickly and dives deep into the souls of his characters, giving them life and meaning. I had to stop several times and reread a page just because it touched me so deeply. You feel every second of his youthful characters' rage, gripping the book tightly in your hands and holding your breath. The high school popularity, the homophobia, the family secrets, the madness and rage...there is something that will tease you and make you stop reading for just a second and think of your own life and your experiences. If you don't cry, if you get mad and throw the book down, or even if you don't hold your breath and rush to finish just one more page, then you will never experience the "soul" of this book. It is truly amazing, and one of the best books I have ever read from any new author. Forget for one moment who his mom is and what she has written; listen to Christopher and the story he has to tell. You will be amazed!

Great space opera brought to Earth

Howard was in contact with Saucerians from the various worlds of the Solar Federation long before the current crop of contactees started channeling members of the Galactic Federation, and in this book he details his adventures with various Venusians, Saturnians and Martians. He even documents his travel to a lunar base over a decade before Apollo astronauts landed there. A great read, with illustrations from out of this world.

This is one of my favorite books

This book will go into my personal collection of spiritual books. Howard Menger has had some very interesting experiences with our brothers and sisters from other planets, and I greatly enjoyed his writing style. I have read it one time, and I will probably read it again in a few weeks. I highly recommend this fine book to anyone who is on the spiritual path.
