A book full of wisdom

This is a book full of wisdom, for intelligent people, as it makes you reflect on the most important things in life. It is well written and structured, easy to follow and interesting.
It is being recommended by coaches & psychologists in Spain and South America, and after having read it I know why. I will always keep it close to be able to review certain topics as time goes by and I have troubles in life. Very helpful indeed.

Es un libro que me está gustando tanto que no lo quiero terminar. Algunos capítulos me los leo dos o tres veces seguidas, y algunas frases las subrayo y las pongo incluso en mi página de Facebook para compartirlas.

This book is about discovering happiness and how to be happy. Full of meaningful insights, the book gives an alternative vision on happiness and points the way to achieving happiness and inner peace. In a practical and human way, the author shows how pain and suffering can be transformed when one takes responsibility for his or her own feelings, how one transcends suffering through an individual awareness to achieve happiness. The author provides a roadmap for happiness --- showing how each person has the capacity to be happy and it is really a question (and choice) of altering one's perspective, or the content of one's conscious reality. On a personal level, the book talks about how one can find happiness and inner harmony within by changing the way one thinks. A great book that gives hope to all those in pain or suffering or for those searching for meaning in life. A definite great read, highly recommended to all!

"Wicked people are full of darkness."

Anna Fekete is a new hire in the Finnish police department's Violent Crime Unit. She is originally from Hungary and is a survivor of the Serbo-Croatian war. She immigrated to Finland with her mother and brother when she was a child. She speaks fluent Finnish and English, along with several other languages. This book begins as she starts her job in the violent crime unit and is partnered up with Esko, a racist, prejudiced drunk. She questions if she can bear spending time with this taciturn, unpleasant man who does not speak to her and covers the alcohol on his breath with mints.

Shortly after she begins her job, a jogger is murdered by a shotgun blast to the head. This murder is followed by two others and the police are now seeking a serial killer, a rarity in Finland. Anna is a great cop but she has a tendency towards depression and insomnia. She once served in the Finnish army and was a good jogger but lately she spends her time channel surfing and smoking cigarettes. She has a brother named Akos who she has not seen in several years. He is an alcoholic and addict and she decides to make contact with him which causes her more problems.

There are no real leads on the case except that a small necklace is left in the pocket of each victim. The necklace is an Aztec symbol for a powerful and wrathful god. The only other connection between the victims is that they are killed while they are out for a run in the evening.

Anna is also intrigued by another case, that of a Kurdish high school student who has called the police emergency number asking for help. When the call is responded to, the girl says that she dialed the number by mistake. Anna doesn't believe her and thinks that the girl is in danger. She decides, on her own, to watch the family and to see what is going on. She knows that some Kurdish families believe in honor killings and isolating their female children until marriage and Anna is suspicious that this might be going on here.

The characters are well-developed, which is one of the real strengths of this book. I felt like I got to know a lot about Anna and Esko as I got deeper into the novel. The book is a real page-turner and a good thriller. My only problem with it is that the climax about the serial killer occurs at the very end and seems implausible. The situation with the Kurdish girl is resolved wonderfully and added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. I think that some of the translation is a bit awkward but most of the book reads very smoothly. It is a thriller that I'd recommend to readers who enjoy Scandinavian noir.

The Hummingbird is Finnish writer Kati Hiekkapelto’s debut novel, an entrant in the Scandinavian crime fiction genre which is so hot right now. Anna Fekete is a Hungarian immigrant to Finland and a brand new detective in the violent crimes unit. On her first day at her new job, a body is found on a jogging path, dead of a gunshot wound, with a strange medallion found in the pocket of her jacket. Before long another body is found on another jogging path, dead of a gunshot wound with the identical medallion in his pocket, and the hunt is on for a serial killer.

The Hummingbird piqued my interest on page one but didn’t deliver on that initial promise. Anna is a likable and complex character but I grew weary of reading about how tired she was. She’s stressed and homesick and depressed – I get it - but it made me tired. On the other hand, depression is monotonous so maybe it’s Hiekkapelto's way of viscerally conveying Anna's precarious state of mind. If the latter is the case then she succeeded The details about the private lives of her colleagues proved superfluous to the story. Inserted at odd points, making for abrupt and clumsy segues, these details merely served to interrupt the flow of the narrative. Anna’s partner Esko, the one colleague that we need to know more about, isn’t given a back story at all and no details of his life outside the office are offered. This is unfortunate because their relationship is important and the evolution of that relationship develops in such a way that I was curious and wished I’d known more about him. The identity of the killer is a surprise, as it should be, but it is such a surprise because there are negligible clues to entice the reader, lead you on and reward your perseverance. The reader is denied that satisfaction and has no opportunities to grin and think, "Aha! That's a clue." We like to congratulate ourselves on our sleuthing abilities - this genre should be interactive. In addition, when the antagonist is revealed there is no back story and little to no explanation offered as to homicidal motivation. Serial killers do not kill randomly. This genre demands psychology. Otherwise the author seems to be offering up a killer at random.

Serial killers are well- and oft-trod ground and there needs to be an element that sets a story apart from so many others. In this case that element is immigration. Hiekkapelto is at her best when channeling the immigrant experience. “Anna…also knew from experience that it would be futile talking to Esko [her partner] and people like him about despair, fear, war, torture, oppression, discrimination, poverty and hunger, about how the world was full of people whose lives were a daily struggle against all of those terrible things.” The author’s empathy and understanding are affecting and I was truly moved. There is a subplot involving a young, Muslim immigrant girl and a case of suspected honor violence. She calls the Finnish equivalent of 911 to claim that her life is in danger. When the other detectives seemingly dismiss the case, Anna – having once been a young, Muslim immigrant girl – appoints herself the girl’s personal protector. This subplot meshes well with the main narrative, plays to Anna’s strengths, and the resolution is a pleasant surprise.

Hiekkapelto is also gifted at descriptive passages. Her characters are diverse and well-delineated. I could picture them in my mind’s eye as individuals. Her descriptive talent also applies to land- and cityscapes. A description of the ghetto new immigrants are consigned to: “The whole place was a forest built of dirty concrete, a thicket of trees as far as the eye could see, a place with trolls grunting on the pathways and creatures lurking in the corners, a place where the glimmer of a fairy tale shone only in the glazed eyes of the drug addicts.” And this: “Kids in baggy jeans were smoking something beneath the roof outside Bihar’s doorway, their presence challenging the shadows cast upon them like a life sentence by the surrounding buildings. Ducks caught in the oil, birds that nobody dressed in overalls is going to come and save.”

In stark contrast, this is the Finnish coastal forest in autumn: “When Anna had walked just over a kilometer, the path swung very close to the shoreline. The rush of iron-grey waves across the autumnal sea could be heard clearly. Anna looked out towards the sea. The wind whipped water into her eyes. If there had been flocks of sheep to clear the shrubs, as there had been centuries ago, she would have been able to see the shore, she thought. A white seagull braved the chilled air. Anna wondered how long it was planning on staying so far north. She gathered a handful of lingonberries and tasted the sweetness brought to them by the hoar frosts.”

As a debut, The Hummingbird is an acceptable first effort. In my opinion the problem has more to do with editing than with the concept, story or characters. There are a lot of adverbs and rarely did anyone just “say” anything; they screamed, cried, conferred, threatened, resolved, quipped, shrieked, exclaimed, cursed, bellowed, shouted and instructed. They even bleated. It seemed as if someone got carried away with a thesaurus. This is the sort of thing an editor is supposed to prevent. See Stephen King's On Writing for the best advice I've ever come across on this subject. There’s even a point where the third person narrative briefly jumps to first person before being yanked back into line. In sum, The Hummingbird was uneven. That said, there are complete characters, flashes of humor, evocative description and observant social commentary. A sequel is in the pipeline and there’s enough promise in this debut that I want to read the next installment before I make up my mind about Hiekkapelto. With practice and skillful editing she could be great. Stay tuned.

Engaging

I read a lot of Scandinavian crime novels. This was pretty good. Ending was odd but most of these type of books are. I read them mostly because of what is revealed about cultures and this was fun in that regard. Lots of Hungarian vulgar expressions that I shared with my Hungarian wife.

Chattie Cornfeld, however, died in a slightly different manner from previous victims, so Slider starts investigating other avenues. Chattie's notably unsavory half sister, Jassy, and Jassy's equally lowlife boyfriend had been pestering Chattie just before her murder. Chattie's estranged father, the head of a major chemical company, is a possible suspect, as are several of her love interests. Slider's own love interest, his pregnant girlfriend, Joanna, ducks in and out of the story, but fails to light up as the other main characters do. An enjoyable read

Detective Inspector Bill Slider is back in this tenth entry in the series. In this outing, DS Slider investigates the death of a jogger found off the trail in a park. At first it looks like a serial killer dubbed the "Park Killer" has struck, but after some investigation too many things do not add up and it is determined that the another killer decided to copycat. The victim, Charlotte"Chattie" Cornfeld, had her own consulting business. She did public relations, website designing and general business matters that her clients like the jazz band, Baroque Solid, needed done. Chattie was an outgoing and lovely young woman whom everyone seemed to like. Why was she found dead in the park? DS Slider delves into the puzzle of Chattie's life to find motive and opportunity in a cast of divergent characters.

When I sit down with a Bill Slider mystery I always know it will be a good story. As always this Slider series is a cleverly plotted police procedural. The slow unraveling of the clues will keep you guessing until the end. Even though the previous books are worth reading, the story is very much stand alone so if you have never read the series, you would not be remiss to start with the most recent.

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles is a writer living in England, who was born and educated in Shepherd's Bush, West London.

Her Bill Slider police procedurals, now numbering ten, are praised for their accuracy, wit, characters and stories.

Dear Departed begins with the discovery of dead female jogger in a park in London. She has no identification and seems to be the victim of a serial park killer who slashes his victims in broad daylight.

Oddly enough, her wounds do not seem serious, and her background, once Detective Inspector Slider and his team find out her identity, seems unusual, to say the least. She had been working in public relations for a new Baroque jazz band, called Baroque Solid (indeed she is identified because she was playing one of their demo CDs).

Her name was Charlotte Cornfeld, "Chattie." She lived in a very nice house, scrupulously clean, and oddly too expensive for someone who is young and just starting out in business.

Did she have an unusual source of money? Had it come from her divorced parents? They eventually discover her father is Henry Cornfeld, of Cornfeld Chemicals, and she had received a monetary gift from him that she invested in real state wisely, leading to her present comfortable home.

Rumors are floating around that Cornfeld Chemicals might be purchased by another chemical giant, a move that might mean a lot of money for the Cornfeld family stockholders.

Chattie's jealous half-sister Jasmine is involved in a very unsavory and dangerous life style, and had crashed in a room in Chattie's house occasionally. Could she or her violent boyfriend have been the cause of Chattie's murder? Slider and Detective Sargeant Jim Atherton work to dig out the truth in Chattie's unusual short life.

Slider's pregnant soon-to-be-wife Joanna, who has given up her orchestra job in Amsterdamn to be with him, is not as involved in this case as in the past.

Armchair Interviews says: Sounds like a fun read with interesting characters, especially appealing if you like reading anything written about England and its charming and unique surroundings.

a good choice to unwind with

If you're looking for a good book to curl up with in order to forget the seasonal madness that the year's end brings or if you'd like to forget that it is bloody cold outside right now, then this is the book that I'd recommend to fight off those seasonal blues! Clever, witty and wholly engaging, "Dearly Departed" was a treat of a read all round!

Detective Inspector Bill Slider would like to be able to give his wholly undivided attention to his pregnant fiancee, Joanna. Unfortunately, murder and the latest serial killer, the Park Killer, seemed to have conspired once again to thwart his wishes. When woman's body is found in the park one early one morning, everyone assumes that the Park Killer (so called because he has committed two such murders already in two other parks) has struck again. A post mortem, however, reveals that this latest killing was not the handiwork of the Park Killer, but rather the inept attempt of someone trying to pass of the killing as that of the serial killer's. Quickly Slider and his team try to establish the victim's identity in order to work out if the murder had a killing was a personal. angle to it or not. What they discover a young woman who was well liked but who seemed to have a very entangled family life -- jealous and resentful half sisters and ex-boyfriends that can't seem to let go. Could one of them have been angry enough to plot her death?

"Dearly Departed" was a rather fun read, more so because of Cynthia Harrod-Eagles' clever and droll prose style. Though truth be told there were spots when I thought that her writing was getting a little too coy and arch for words. Fortunately, this only happened twice and so my reading pleasure was saved. The mystery-investigative subplot unfolded along slightly predictable lines, so that what really made this a fun and enjoyable read was the repartee and quips that the police officers exchanged, and the author's sympathetic and engaging portrayal D.I. Bill Slider. All in all, this was a completely engaging and absorbing read, and I'm glad that I had an entire afternoon to myself to enjoy "Dearly Departed" with.

This is a story where we see the danger of drug abuse. It's erotic but with her desperately seeking professional help at the end we realize that this story has a moral. The sex is bisexual but it is great to see that her roommate loves her and takes her to get help. This is not some trite story.

Some people who write about relationships do not have the wealth of experience to do so, and this is not about how long they ve been married, its about haven been through the ups and downs and still stay together, and thats what being married requires and they have brought all of that into paper and i love that.

There are not many books out there like this one for several reasons

This book is DEFINETLY a game changer. There are not many books out there like this one for several reasons:

1. Even though race is not specifically mentioned in the book ...it does come from an African American perspective when it comes to marriage. People usually teach based upon their experiences and many of those experiences are the result of our culture. I have been to marriage classes and retreats, but many things I couldn't relate because culturally it didn't apply to the African American community.

2. It's incredibly transparent....most of the marriage books I have read have personal stories, but the stories are usually confined to just a few chapters or specific subject within the book. This book had personal experiences from authors on every single page! Not one marriage book I exposes the author and shows the vulnerability the way this book does.

3. The stories are impactful as they can make you cry, laugh, or inspire you to do better. Some postings have made me pray instantly in repentance.

4. Both husband and wife wrote it together...both authors gave perspectives on the SAME issues and spoke to each respective gender. GENIUS! It allows people to see how in the midst of conflict...how one individual can do wrong...yet they still have an opportunity to do right regardless of the other person. You get to see both sides whether the person was wrong or right.

Again...I love this book and it is a staple in my home. I recommend this to all my married and single friends.

Powerful book!!

From the first few pages, you can see what makes this couple so special! They allow their transparency to be the platform in which God gets the glory. I've been following the Vance's ministry for quite some time so I was very excited to hear that they released a book and it is nothing short of powerful. The testimony of what God has done in their marriage is awe-inspiring and I know it will bring much hope and encouragement to those who have also gone through struggles within their marriage. Although I am single, I still found it to be useful not only for when I get married, God willing, but also in this season that I am in now. I believe it is a great preparation tool and I will highly recommend it to all that I know.

The author does warn the reader that if, you do nothing, well, nothing will happen, so it's important to take his advice and put it into practice. The book goes in depth about nutrition, fitness, natural health, mental health, etc. It's a great beginner's guide for anyone looking to ditch the old habits and start afresh.

This book could make a wonderful New Year's gift to encourage a loved one to go ahead head first into those New Year's resolutions.

"Life is a gift. Take care of your body." This part of the Motivation chapter resonated with me. We tend to think our bodies will never wear and that we can go on and on forever. Not so.

I highly recommend this easy read for anyone looking to change their lives for the long term!

This is made me realize that I am one of y'all who slump for long time. To be honest, it is hard for me to get activity alike I want to go gym but no time. I have a lot of idea but not doing action yet. I should change myself to do it than think too much. I like this book help me understand and advice for me. It lacks a table of contents, which would make flicking back and fowards a little easier, but it covers the basics of getting into shape, eating right, and getting motivated. A great read for the person just starting out on the self-improvement journey!
