A brave woman's journey out of the dark wood of bipolar disorder.

Appalling. A true horror story of what bipolar disorder added to a dreadful family can do to us. Like Susan, who I know slightly, I'm also bipolar, so the story hit me with great force and discomfort. Bipolar can entirely direct our lives as well as mess it up. In Susan's case, it led to failed marriages that should not have happened in the first place; and to children who inherited what amounted to a family curse. The story is both purgative and intensely brave. It is a memoir of facing down and overcoming an illness that can be--and is--crippling and merciless in its predations. Kudos to Susan Rose, who told her story with clarity and directed anger: direct at the illness that could easily have killed her. I am grateful that it did not, and amazed at how those of us who have suffered bipolar disorder have found out ways out of the swamp.

Well crafted and engaging, Susan's memoir will change the way you think about madness. There is a wide range of people who have serious mental illness, and she does an excellent job showing us her particular experience in it's most unadulterated and rawest sense As John Amodeo writes for Psychology Today, “Our task is not to transcend our humanity in a misguided effort to ease our pain or polish some favorable self-image.” Instead, Amodeo believes, “Emotional and spiritual maturity rests upon the wisdom and ability to welcome our vulnerable feelings and engage with them wisely.” I feel this was done nicely within the confines of the text.

Honest, Educational, Heart felt and Raw

I met Susan while visiting my Dad in Pittsfield, MA, when she gave me a copy of her book. Didn't know much about BPD. Thought she was an interesting person so what the heck. Her book was honest, educational, heart felt, raw. The best chapter was about her and Peter. With life's challenges for both, different worlds, Susan saw through the exterior and saw the inner beauty. I see a lot of homeless people in my city. Given me new eyes. Thank you.
