Top-notch writing, but a bit convoluted plot
By Jane Monroe
I really enjoyed Jonathan's prior novel, Broken Lightning, and waited eagerly for this sequel. I just finished reading it and have mixed feelings. On the one hand, Jonathan’s writing is top-notch. He strikes the right balance between providing enough description to give the reader the right context to clearly convey any scene, while leaving enough to the imagination to keep the reader's interest. The book is peppered with clever metaphors like the sinking of a fountain into the earth looking like "a quarter shimmying into a coin roll". Beautiful descriptions that gave me the shivers. The book is also free of grammar errors, misspellings, and so forth--it’s quite obvious Jonathan either had it professionally edited or has a knack for this himself.
The book fares less well with its plot. I started to get confused when all the characters began asserting themselves in Ross's head. I hoped that that would be an interlude but I grew more and more confused as I read on. There are just too many characters sharing/swapping bodies and it was difficult to keep track of who was doing what to whom. On the other hand, I really enjoyed the moments when Jonathan returned to his core characters of Ross and Neal, as their relationship as good friends unfolded beautifully. So too, the concept of "Happauges syndrome", or Excessive Inquisitiveness Disorder. The feeling that this would indeed become a future psychiatric disorder is just believable enough to make me pause and think…
A few other concerns. In the last book Jonathan wonderfully sketched out Riktali society and its relationship to the present world (the appearance of Linkers). He tied this in to ancient Chinese ideas of yin/yang, divination, and so forth that seemed quite believable given Jonathan’s background in Asian history (with a whole appendix dedicated to fleshing this out in the prior book). In Godfall Golden, Riktali seemed to fade into the background and become little more than a convenient prop for the copious “qi” used by the various characters. Instead of becoming more real, it became somewhat cliché, which is a real shame since it’s a great concept!
As a woman, I also found it kind of strange that there were practically no female characters in the book. Yes, I realize that it’s a gay-themed novel, and have no problems with that at all, but it seemed that Ross and Neal are living in a world without females. Apart from very brief appearances of Ian’s mom, no women appear at all in the book, even though there are quite a lot of characters. They’re in New York City for crying out loud! This men’s-only world must have been a conscious decision on the part of the author but I couldn’t understand the benefit of this.
The author also included a nifty map of post-apocalyptic New York with a sixth borough (cool!). Apart from this, and the use of “solar sails” for transport and “cards” replacing phones, this world of the future seems little different from today (excepting, of course, the illegality of asking questions). I found this somewhat unbelievable and wished he would have given this new world more thought--how it’s governed, why technology is stagnant, what motivates people, etc. This would have made the book longer, but that wouldn’t be a problem since the book is kind of short to begin with. Jonathan--you’ve created an interesting world--let us get to know it more!
All in all, Godfall Golden is well worth a read. Jonathan is a fine author and clearly has great potential. I eagerly look forward to his next work, but hope he learns from the experience of having written Godfall Golden.

engaging book with a compelling world
By Amazon Customer
This is my first novel I have read by Jon Cann and I look forward to reading more. As a newcomer (newreader?) to the broken lightning series it's true there was a lot to wrap my head around and at times I didn't comprehend everything that was going on, as Jane Monroe pointed out. But rather than detracting from my enjoyment that only served to draw me further in--Cann has created a whole world full to bursting with history, legend, detailed characters and action. It really felt like I was submerged smack into the middle of a tangible reality and as I hungrily read on I was figuring out what was going on right along side Cann's engaging main character Ross as his world was slowly torn apart by mysterious and devastating columns of light.
As a sucker for alternate realities (and a New Yorker) I found Cann's twisted alternative NYC awesomely compelling. I especially love the super subways, though it seems that Cann's hipsters ride a sort of portable windsurfer rather than the bicycles, which are the ubiquitous means of hipster conveyance in my NYC. I hope to find about how this society came to be in reading Cann's other books. There's so much more I want to know about this world without questions, where anyone who can't suppress his or her innate curiosity is either charged as a criminal or stigmatized as having a mental disorder (Hauppage's Syndrome).
Lastly I simply have to point out the appendices. The fullness of his world can be clearly seen in the book's backmatter where Cann lays out the building blocks and rules of his world's ancient language Riktali. Cann's dedication to craft is refreshing, and overall I found his book to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Universal themes in a richly imagined world
By Anna
Although this novel takes place in a burned-out New York City, in a world where spiritual forces become physical, its themes will ring true to anyone who's ever yearned for connection -- aka anyone's who's ever shlumped across this earth in a human body.
The society within the novel places strict limits on how much people can show curiosity about one another. Asking questions is pathologized and outlawed. In this, Cann is raising age-old issues that have new significance today: is it ok to reach for people before they offer themselves? How do you get close? And now that everyone's life is on the internet, has the whole notion of identity changed?
One of the joys of this novel is seeing how emotional realities become manifest through the lens of Eastern philosophy, futurism, and Cann's invented Riktali culture. Chi is a force you can see and touch. The "underground" of memory is brought to life as a subterranean world beneath Manhattan. The story also offers a lot to offer for the psychology-oriented, who may interpret the ghosts in Ross's head as past traumas, losses, and desires.
Finally, I have to give this book a shoutout for representation. Ross is a man who loves and feels attraction for other men, written unapologetically. He's a character who might mean a lot to neglected LGBTQ sci-fi readers, and he's also a dry, intelligent, idiosyncratic, and wholly original narrator.
There's too much contained in this book to unpack in one review. I highly recommend you check it out for yourself.
