Kudzu River, by Fran Rizer

Kudzu River is a gripping tale of three women’s lives entangled by a serial killer—a story of abuse, murder, and retribution. Unlike Fran Rizer’s previous Callie Parrish mysteries, Kudzu River is not a cozy. When Teacher of the Year Katie Wray returns to her hometown, Tanner, SC, she expects to be met by her sister Maggie who borrowed Katie’s apartment and car for the summer. Instead, she finds that both Maggie and the car have disappeared. Katie is furious that, once again, Maggie proved to be irresponsible. She suspects that Maggie has gone off with the man she’d told Katie she was dating—Frankie Barker. Katie’s anger turns to fear when Sheriff Wade Jolley informs her that the Special .38 Colt Cobra revolver she borrowed from her ex has been found in an alley beside an unidentified corpse. Katie assures him the gun is at her apartment, but when they go there, the gun is missing along with Katie’s televisions, computer, landline phones, and expensive coffee maker. The sheriff questions whether the John Doe is Frankie Barker and Maggie shot him or Frankie shot the unidentified man and Maggie is an unfound victim. More bodies are found. Someone is carving a trail of dead teachers along coastal Carolina, and Katie fears Maggie is dead. She tries to talk about it with her friend Samantha Branham (also a teacher), but Samantha is more concerned about fitting into a size two dress, blonder hair, and conquering smooth-talking womanizer Sam Campbell than the possibility of personal danger. Tennessee Linda Pearson, a life-long victim, is haunted by her past, her dead parents, and her love of Jack Daniel's whiskey. Horrible memories of her childhood and the husband she married to escape her parents fill her days and nightmares, leaving no room to be concerned about what goes on around her. Though his photo is being shown on media nation-wide as a person of interest in the serial killings, Linda fails to recognize the killer when she sees him. When the murders increase in frequency and violence, Katie receives macabre gifts and threatening messages targeting her as the next to die. Senior Agent John Gross, FBI profiler, suggests using her as bait to chum the waters for the murderer, but Sheriff Jolley refuses. Torn between his desire to end this death spree and growing feelings for Katie, he’s already violated his usual strict adherence to protocol by allowing his attraction to her to dictate some questionable decisions. The killer is a threat to all women, especially teachers, but he targets Katie sending her macabre gifts and threatening messages. His confrontations are always deadly, and when he kidnaps Katie, the conclusion is explosive.

BUY IT, READ IT, (BEWARE), AND BE DAZZLED!
By David
Highly recommended non-cozy (emphatically so) from Fran Rizer, the author of the beloved Callie Parrish mystery series (check them all out here on Amazon). It's a masterfully written tale of (as Rizer notes) abuse, murder, and retribution. An electrifying departure from the usual cozyesque fare from the author. As Richard D. Laudenslager, author of "Wounded," writes, KUDZU RIVER is to cozies what a great white shark is to a guppy. Buy it, read it, (beware), and be dazzled.

A Thoroughly Realized Thriller
By David Dean
Fran Rizer has scored big with "Kudzu River"--complex, compelling, and intriguing at every turn (and there are many turns), this is a thoroughly realized thriller. Ms. Rizer has crafted unforgettable characters that command the reader's sympathy and interest, with a malicious and twisted killer putting them through their paces. From page one, you're off to the races and never certain of what lies ahead. It's tough, entertaining, and not a little sexy. This is a writer at the peak of her craft and deserves reading. You will be rewarded.

Loved All the Flavors of Fran Rizer's Five Star Break-out Thriller But Not Always the Plain Vanilla
By Amazon Customer
By: Ron Baxley, Jr., author

***** (Five Stars)

This Southern suspenseful thriller, _Kudzu River_, by Fran Rizer, known for her Callie Parrish cozies and who implicitly states on the cover and in promotion that this is a departure for her, reads like a cross between _Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil_, _Silence of the Lambs_ and other Thomas Harris thriller novels, and standard mystery novels, and it works!

Before I discuss my greatest love, I must extend kudos to Rizer for the lyrical descriptions of setting surrounding the titular kudzu river that show her background as a poet and songwriter that remind me of Pat Conroy, James Dickey, and even another thriller title itself, _Mystic River_.

What I loved most about this novel was the minor characters and antagonist. From Sybil-ish, Norman Bates-esque yet uniquely Southern Tennessee Linda Pearson who we wonder may actually figure into the killings at times to the morbidly obese psychic with the pulled-back hair and squeaky, tiny voice to the antagonist victim (unnamed in this review so as not to create spoilers) who becomes a victimizer ripped straight from today’s headlines, these were the characters that virtually breathed from the pages and had me laughing and crying with them through their excruciatingly tragic and, at times, desperately comic circumstances.

This leaves me to Katie, the main character. Katie is a well-rounded character who shows vulnerability at times when faced with imminent danger of a serial killer who pursues teachers, including her sister who the killer mistook for her. She holds up well and shows amazing strength and is a strong feminist when it comes to not always having the sheriff, a potential love interest in the book, look after her. She often declines his advances and assistance. I found all of this made her interesting. At times, I found Katie to be just too much of a goody-goody, a little too vanilla to be as interesting as the minor characters but not throughout the entire novel. Despite that one temporary personal pet peeve in the characterization for me, this is a great thriller with wonderful characters overall that does not need to be missed.
