About the Author
Sally Waters is passionate about people learning Mandarin and being inspired by China’s amazing culture. For more than twenty years she has studied Chinese and lived in or travelled regularly to China. In 2013 Sally founded Studio China, where she helps professionals and couples, some semi-retired or retired achieve their lifelong dream to be bilingual by teaching them Chinese so they can travel independently to China for business or pleasure. Sally takes her clients on Study Tours to China to learn more and speak Chinese in China. Sally loves joining in conversations about how we need to stop talking about learning Chinese and just do it. She lives in Brisbane, Australia with her Chinese husband and three young children.

A thought-provoking read about China and the culture there

Sally’s book is a quirky collection of bite-sized stories, bite-sized observations about Chinese culture and living and being a part of a Chinese family. It draws out numerous cultural customs, traditions and beliefs inherently rooted in Chinese culture through a light-hearted yet thought-provoking manner. Sally’s personal anecdotes about living in China and mingling with the locals gives the book an honest voice from the perspective of a Western woman and makes it a compelling read.
As an Australian-born Chinese myself, many of the short stories taking place at different times in the author’s life in this book resonated with me. In particular, I smiled while reading Sally’s observations on how the Chinese love chilli, eating big all day and their obsession with fair skin – my Chinese parents certainly exhibit these traits. For me, this book was a very much relatable read, and a trip down memory lane. This book is certainly recommended to anyone interested in Chinese culture, life in contemporary China or those who are planning a trip to China.

As a person of Chinese decent I was very interested to read this book. Sally Waters writes astutely, perceptively and clearly. I found that many of the things I had learned growing up in my half-Chinese household were suddenly made clear to me, and made sense! I enjoyed reading Sally's book because she writes so knowledgeably and entertainingly.
