Erina Wing, the love interest in No Man's Land is almost as tough as Carter?
I love strong female characters and wanted to make the woman in Carter's life as tough as he is. She's the one woman he can't live with or without. She helps test him to the core and brings out the best in him.
I was very pleased when one Karen Chisholm wrote a review in, Australia & NZ Crime Fiction Reviews and said, "The relationship between Carter and Erina has the same sorts of contrasts. And it doesn't hurt that there's nothing decorative female about Erina - she's a strong, capable woman in her own right."
I look forward to developing their relationship further in subsequent Carter novels.

While No Man's Land is primarily designed to be a highly entertaining page-turning thriller, I did want it to work on a number of levels.
I wanted to explore the relationship between spirituality and religion. I also wanted to explore the many facets of Islam and how a relatively small number of Indonesia's two hundred and fifty million Muslims became radicalised and violent.
The fanatical Indonesian terrorist cell are the perfect opponent for Carter in this story. They are highly motivated, well organised and ruthless.

A fantastic debut

Early on we learn that No Man’s Land is, for surfers, the churning washing machine of dangerous white water between the rocks and the break where you don’t want to get caught. From then on, Fishman puts his hero in one no man’s land after another in an epic adventure spanning continents and cultures.
Russell Carter was once a member of a secret ninja-monk order, a sort of special-ops outfit with a spiritual bent that was the peak of his ambition until it wasn’t. Something dark happened, dark enough for Carter to renounce the order and drift off to Lennox Head on the east coast of Australia, there to spend his days surfing and trying to forget.
But the past catches up with Carter, first in the form of some assassins who come after him at Lennox Head, then in the shape of Erina, a fellow member of the order and the love of his life. Carter gets sucked into the no man’s land of trying to thwart an extremist plot, wishing that he didn’t care but finding that the more time he spends with Erina, the more he cares. Soon he's racing against the clock to prevent a terrorist attack of spectacular and horrific proportions.
Fishman is the real deal. He knows how to sustain a cracking pace from start to finish, so much so that I found myself saying after each chapter, “just one more…” There are plenty of fun twists, and the main characters have enough layers to them that you’re still discovering them at the end of the book. Carter is terrific protagonist, as dangerous as Jack Reacher but with a spiritual dimension. If you like losing yourself in fast-paced thrillers and are looking for a fresh new voice, you’ll love No Man’s Land.

is not exactly "expected territory" even with the best will in the world

A thriller that features surfing and a special operative anti-terrorism order, based on Eastern mysticism, is not exactly "expected territory" even with the best will in the world. Which makes NO MAN'S LAND by Australian author Roland Fishman an interesting prospect.
For something that starts out with such an odd premise, there is much to like about this book. Sticking closely to the thriller format there are thrills, spills and a lot of action built into a plot that actually makes sense. The fundamentals of threat are here - kidnapping, terrorism, assassination attempts - everything is pointing to somebody trying very hard to sideline the Order and it's enigmatic leader Thomas Wing. Despite Carter's willing separation from the group, he's dragged back in its defence - and in an attempt to save his own life.
As well as all the action, the past relationship between Carter and Wing's daughter Erina adds an interesting twist to the standard romance environment. Means the sexual tension is nicely balanced with a serious dollop of guilt and resentment but despite any personal difficulties, Erina and Carter have to work together to stop the terrorist cell hell bent on destroying the Order, leaving them free to wreak havoc in Sydney on New Year's Eve. Of course the terrorist cell is made up of the stock standard "baddies" these days which is increasingly predictable. The setting, however, is very different and works incredibly well - keeping everything within our region and considerably more real as a result.
There's no doubt at all that the unusual elements of this thriller are what give it some of its strength. The nature of the order, and the belief system behind it, creates an interesting challenge between acceptance and fight-back. Mirrored somewhat in the surfer mindset as well. All of this makes Carter an unexpected hero type - flawed, questioning, brave with enough of the all action hero type to be believable he's quite realistic, very believable. The relationship between Carter and Erina has the same sorts of contrasts - the attraction, their past, their willingness to put everything to one side in the pursuit of the ultimate aim, makes them again, believable. And it doesn't hurt that there's nothing decorative female about Erina - she's a strong, capable woman in her own right - just the sort of person you would expect a parent like Wing to have raised within the order.
Added to the believability of the unexpected, the realistic portray of the two central characters, and a strong plot, there's a hefty dose of good, dry very Australian humour and a dusting of super-hero goings on. Which makes NO MAN'S LAND spot on for a bit of over the summer escapist reading. Or during winter amusement, or any time of the year good thrills and spills.

no man's land

The story moves at reasonably good pace, but drags at times. Too much religious moralising slows the pace. The characters are believable yet predictable. Not necessarily a gripping page turner, it proves an easy read. Recommended
