Troubling to think that the United States Army Command and General Staff College even accepts papers like this.

Major Stuckert was very fair in his presentation of premillennial dispensationalism. That's somewhat rare among critics of that view. With only one glaring exception, this work did not promote some of the more common myths against the dispensational view of Scripture. I was thankful for that.
Other positive comments: his survey of millennialism in American history is very worthwhile. Our nations founding in postmillennial thought and the sweeping change to premillennial thought is well described (although his psychological justifications for that change are dubious).
Great bibliography. Very helpful to track down his source material.
Unfortunately, the two or three positive things I can say about this book are greatly outweighed by all the negative things I could say. This book describes "collective anxiety," "the human psyche," "coping mechanisms" and numerous other such expressions to indicate what the author views as the wrong-headed perspective for national policy. He quoted extensively from Jason Dittmer, but would have been well served to give heed to Mr. Dittmer's warning.
"Measuring the actual impact of premillennial dispensationalists on policy formation is of course a dubious business, as the psychology of decision making at the presidential level are of course well beyond the ability of academics to do anything but speculate." (Jason Dittmer, Of Gog and Magog: The Geopolitical Visions of Jack Chick and Premillennial Dispensationalism)
I agree with Mr. Dittmar's "of course" statement. It is a "dubious business" and Stuckert's entire thesis is accurately defined.
If premillennial dispensationalism was truly shaping our national policy the way this book is terrified it might be doing, we would all be better for it. Sadly, the literal hermeneutic and high regard for Biblical inerrancy essential to premillennial dispensationalism is quickly disappearing from churches and seminaries everywhere.
Just sharing my thoughts here. Take them for what they're worth, which according to Mr. Stuckert isn't much. My views are "inaccurate assessments." I'm vulnerable to "pessimism and paranoia." I'm shackled by "a dismal picture of a world disintegrating toward a cataclysmic end." My theology is "at odds with the empirical method that goes into appraising reality."
Perhaps the most insulting and ludicrous viewpoint was the comparison of premillennial dispensationalism to the Ayatollahs of Iran. In Stuckert's view, the impact of apocalypticism is worse in the United States than the Islamic apocalypticism espoused by the Ayatollahs. How sad.

Super interesting! Not sure I agree with everything in here, but it definitely made me look at things differently. I also like that the author gives good explanations of things I have wondered about for a long time.
