Somewhat Dated but Still Useful

Slippery Paths in the Darkness is a useful read for anyone interested in development of the concepts of syncretism and contextualization. Tippett’s insights, though written decades ago, still have relevance. He wisely points out, for example, that in evaluating any particular practice, “What is wrong with it?” is the wrong question, as this approach suggests disagreement and division. He proposes that Christ himself (communion relationship) is the point of reference, an approach which suggests unity.

As might be expected in a compilation of a variety of talks and essays, readers will likely find some chapters more helpful than others. For me personally, the chapter entitled “Star Gazing” (on astrology) was not very helpful, whereas chapter 7, “The Ethnotheology of the People of God and Their Covenant Relationship,” was quite helpful. Also, some significant chunks of material (like the story of Juan the Mayan) are repeated because they were presented in more than one talk.

Tippett discusses a wide-ranging set of non-Christian worldviews, but offers minimal interaction with Islam (a topic of personal interest for me). At one point he writes: “With Islam we have a different set of problems, which do not concern our subject for discussion.”

Numerous interesting examples from the 1960’s struck me as now being more of historical interest than direct current relevance. Yet I appreciated his clear stance against inclusivism and pluralism, with statements such as this: ““Our day is not very different from the day of the Christian conflict with Gnosticism. They [those encouraging pluralism] would engage in faith distortion by removing Christ’s place as the only Saviour, and the biblical emphasis of persuasion for decision in Christian witness to the nations. They would engage in faith distortion with the religions by seeking a universal religion, which supposedly finds Christ or the Spirit within all religions.”

As an antidote to syncretism, Tippett recommends: “There are two basic principles for confronting syncretism: (1) A powerful confrontation with Jesus Christ Himself on a personal level and a challenge to put one’s life on the line with him; and (2) effective incorporation into a church group for spiritual support and nurture in terms of scriptural study and prayer.”

Subsequent discussions on these topics have built on Tippett’s perspectives; his own insights are still worth consideration.

Enjoyable, but read "with a filter"

Having travelled through various parts of Asia for almost 40 years, I thoroughly enjoyed all of these short stories set in or near Bangkok.
However the over-bearing presence of the editor who added totally un-necessary "introductions" to each story soon became unbearable.
Finally, I found the solution... skip these silly introductions and just enjoy the individual author's writings.
Given the above comment, I recommend "Monsoon Midnights".

An Authentic Taste of Bangkok

A must-read for anyone who's had a love affair with Bangkok - the city itself, and its people. This is a book refreshingly free of the bar girl or sexpat chick-lit that is so prevalent in foreign literature written about Thailand. This collection of short stories will not disappoint - written from the perspective of international women who have lived here themselves, walked Bangkok's dusty streets, and know this city inside and out, and interspersed with engaging, imaginative artwork: for those who call Bangkok home and are now far from home, for those who have loved and lost Bangkok, for those who want to know the insider's perspective on life here (with a twist of fantasy thrown in here and there) - come, laugh at Bangkok's all too familiar quirks, cringe as the words on the page bring wafts of the smell of Bangkok's polluted streets and the goosebumps of a motorcycle brushing just a bit too close, smile as the crinkles on the faces of inhabitants of the Land of Smiles come to life on the page. The Bangkok You Have Not Seen

What a tribute to Bangkok! For a long time, this city seemed to bear an image painted by a prejudiced few. I carried this mental image in my mind when I came to live here few years ago. That has changed. The time I spent in this place not only expanded my view of it, but also gave me access to deeper insights into the people's unique values and customs. Furthermore, lasting friendships have sealed my fondness of the city.

Moonson Midnights has created a vivid picture of the special qualities of the Thai culture and has shared an in-depth account of how this unique culture accepts foreign visitors with warmth and grace-- even to the point where their seemingly intrusive presence could have easily disturbed their comfort zone. With a clever approach in storytelling, this book has totally discredited the cliches that once defined Bangkok.

It has some commentary in which the author does a very good job at revealing the nature and spirit of Jesus/Joshua ...

I have read this book and I must say it was very refreshing! It is the
four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John based on the NASB translation
but with clarification of religious terms making it easier for people to
read and understand. It has commentary in which the author does a very good
job at revealing the nature and spirit of Jesus in a clear and simple way.
He consistently points the reader to the person of Jesus as the one whom we
should listen to and be guided by. As a disciple of Jesus I was happy to
see that someone else can actually see Christianity and its book, the
bible, as something that not only misrepresents the Heavenly Father but
actually keeps people away from Him.

In reading the other persons comments I was quite surprised. It may be
that they never read this book or she is coming from a very religious point
of view? I completely disagree with her comments! To say that the author
throws out the entire bible is not true as he clearly states that the whole
book is not the Word of God, and that one would do well to listen to the
Word of God (Jesus). Furthermore, the author points out that the scripture
(Bible) has many things, ideas, beliefs, stories that indeed contradict the
Jesus' teachings. He points only to Jesus to define the Father and I for
one think that is an excellent place to be. To say that he teaches a false
God and a false Jesus is so far from the truth! The book is the four
gospels that contain the words and teachings of Jesus so I guess the other
person does not believe that Jesus' words and teachings are true. This book
actually helps uncover the truth, pointing to the Son of God to know God,
what He is like and what he wants. The negative comments seem to be of a
more personal level and do not accurately describe the book that I read.
Read it for yourself! Great book!

One thing that I would change about the book is I wish the name of the
books (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) were on each page for easier
reference.

Tim Spiess is a false prophet who preaches lies about God

Tim Spiess preaches a false God and a false Jesus who were never revealed in scripture and therefore cannot save your soul. He believes only Jesus' words in red in the New Testament are divinely inspired, the rest of the Bible can be discarded.

Tim is a dangerous man as he is fixed in his delusions about God and is in effect attempting to start a cult. His teaching is absolutely soul-destroying and undermines true faith.

Tim also denies the concept of God as a trinity, a belief that is fundamental to the Christian faith.

Writer and publisher Namita Gokhale is the author of twelve books. Her first novel, Paro: Dreams of Passion, published in 1984, created a furor with its candid sexual humour. Other novels include The Book of Shadows, Shakuntala: The Play of Memory, The Habit of Love and Priya, a sequel to Paro. Gokhale has worked extensively with Indian myth. She has written The Book of Shiva and retold the Mahabharata for young readers. She has also edited In Search of Sita: Revisiting Mythology, a landmark anthology on feminine figures in the Indian epics. A co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival and of Mountain Echoes, the Bhutan literary festival, Gokhale is committed to showcasing literature from across the Indian languages. She currently curates Kitaabnama: Books and Beyond, a multilingual book show on Doordarshan.

To make matters worse, when a powerful succubus suddenly emerges in Spectrum and threatens the safety of both humans and immortals, London is ordered to join forces with his immortal counterpart, Captain Pascal St-Maurice, a vampire who, as far as London is concerned, is a fancy pants with no respect. And to Pascal, London is an anal, uptight, prejudiced jerk who has no idea how to dress with class.

Now, working together to confront the new enemy that doesn’t discriminate, the two law enforcers decide to make the best of the bad situation. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy, especially when their mutual animosity eventually gives way to unexpected and unquenchable attraction.

good story badly written

I love gay romance, be it realistic or fantasy, and I read everything I can get my hands on. I bought this book because the story seemed like it would be interesting. The plot is really good, the two main characters are engaging.
But the author's writing style is. how do I put this constructively: immature. It reads like it was written by a sixth grader, who understands the concept of plot and characterization, but really hasn't developed a workable style.
The action sequences are rushed and barren of descriptive prose. The minor characters seem emotionless. The author tells us what they feel, but there's no empathy. And some of the dialog is just ridiculous. Mr. Manly, nobody talks like that!
I would have liked it better if the vampires were more serious and less campy, and if the story had gone into more detail, more up-close-and-personal with the succubus, the witch, and the torturer, as well as London and Pascal. I feel like I skimmed the surface of Spectrum and I was left unfulfilled.

A Yummy Hot Human Cop Mets Yummy Hot self centered well dressed Vampire Cop and what do you get? A Match Made PERFRECTLY in Spectrum Skies! DJ has done it again!! Only DJ Manly can make being a vain vampire sexy hot and desirable! London our human police captain is hot sexy and got a hang up... He doesn't much like Specs so much. Something (because I'm not telling) in his past has turned him against Vampires and then we have Vampire Captain Pascal St-Maurice is as vain as they come. He is good enough at his job but when a new and unforeseen enemy threatens not only the Humans but the Specs Alike our unlikely Duo has to save the day if they don't kill each other or themselves first. We our unlikely pair work through their issues and comes together to bring down an unforeseen enemy or will they die trying?

DJ Manly has done it again. I swear DJ's Vampires get hotter and hotter with every story. Throw in some Werewolves as well as various other supernatural specs and you have yourself one hell of a hot ass story. I know that by the time I put my e-reader down I couldn't wait to see what happens next. Sometimes tells me that this dynamic duo can put Batman and Robin to shame. As always DJ's Characters are believable. London is the picture perfect rumbled police Detective you see in all the movies and books. He loves his job and what he does for his community and only wants what's best for others before his self.

Pascal St-Maurice is a Vampire unto himself, Cocky, self assured, Vain and Looks like the devils own in a pair of tight black leather pants. He takes want his wants and is use to getting his way... Well except when it comes to a certain pair of Twins in his care and a Human Detective he is secretly crushing for. When they are both faced with their past and present it's interesting to see who comes to whose rescue when the chips are down.

On my Scale of Erect Peni of 1-10 DJ's Spectrum Skies Gets a 10++ Sorry but DJ can make anything seem hot and sexy and His Vampires are to die for in my humble opinion. Both the main Characters are down and Dirty sexy men and their sex scenes are not different.

Now on my Scale of sell the Kids to buy this book and it can wait to pay day. Hands down Put the Kiddies on E-bay and get this book ASAP! This is the first book in a series of books and you don't want to miss out and I look forward to all the books to come!!!

This story was so fun to read!

I had a blast getting wrapped up in this story. The main characters played off each other so well. I found myself laughing at their quirky and charming back and forth bantering. Great paranormal romance!
