Robertson has amassed good mileage—and some really good novels—out of the world’s endless fascination with Sherlock Holmes, going well beyond the old chestnut of claiming to have come across a mislaid Watson manuscript. Robertson’s protagonists are a couple of drily funny British lawyers who work out of offices at 221B Baker Street. They get sacks of mail from people who believe Holmes is real. Occasionally, a letter will pique their interest and send them off on the trail of a miscreant. The novels began as wonderful mixes of suspense, detection, and muddle-through comedy, though the tone darkened as the series went on. This latest has gone grim. It begins with the whipping of a half-naked man with a knotted rope, then moves to a bombing death, and the entry of the flippant heroes halfway through doesn’t lighten the tone. There’s a subtext here: the evil is loosed because gullible people believed, like the letter writers, that Holmes existed. The novel can be read as a warning against believing in fairy tales, or simply as an artfully done mystery. --Don Crinklaw

Better and better

Every time I read a new book in this series, I am pleasantly surprised by how much better Robertson's writing gets. From the very first scene, a gripping description of a good person being treated badly in 1893, through a WWII scene and up to the present day or actually 1998, we are kept going by witty dialogue, a satisfying love story, and a mystery within a mystery. This time we are still linked to the Sherlock Holmes stories by a schizophrenic woman from the last book, who thinks Reggie is responsible for the death of her ancestor, the real James Moriarty. Reggie and fiancée Laura roll through some rainy moors beset by various mishaps which may or may not be accidents, only to have the day saved by brother Nigel and a paparazzo. It is very hard to review a mystery without giving away too much, but if you enjoy humor along with your mayhem, this book is for you.

Nice twist on the Sherlock Holmes story

The premise of this book was intriguing, and I enjoy Sherlock Holmes books so I picked this up at my local indie bookstore. The book starts off with a bang and develops quickly. The transition through time periods is well done and kept me turning pages. The dialogue and description give a good sense of the characters and the era. The only disappointment was the F-bomb about 2/3 of the way through the book. It was completely out of character for who said it and totally unnecessary.

Danger 100 Years in the Making

All that Reggie Heath is focusing on is his upcoming engagement trip with Laura to her family estate to officially announce their upcoming marriage. Unfortunately, the Sherlock letters rear their head again as he needs to help prepare a special display with many of the old ones before he can go.
However, one of the old letters he unearths contains a secret connected to Moriarty, and events begin to unfold that might bring the secret to light. By the time it all settles, who will be left standing?
Yes, I’m being a little vague here because the novel unfolds in a great way, but it’s hard to say much without spoiling much of the book. In fact, the book starts in the past, so we do know much of what is happening and the fun is watching the characters figure it out. Still, I don’t want to spoil it.
Speaking of spoiling, the book definitely spoils the second book in the series, so you really should read that one first.
Even though this isn’t a mystery in the traditional murder and 5 suspects format, it is very entertaining and suspenseful. I was enjoyed from start to finish. The characters are great as always as well and are a pleasure to spend time visiting.
So if you are looking for something fun this is definitely for you. I couldn’t put it down and suspect you’ll be turning the pages just as quickly.
