A graduate of the Institute of Children's Literature, Shirley Kiger Connolly loves to wear different hats and use both sides of her brain. With her creative mind she pens historical fiction romances laced with nuggets of inspiration, and when wearing her thinking cap, she writes nonfiction devotional books. With a third trusty hat she hopes contains a bit of wisdom, Shirley teaches Koinonia women's bible studies and often speaks at retreats or luncheons. Outside her writing and speaking time, Shirley is an active mom and grandma who loves searches for different way she can rearrange her furniture, if she's not cross-stitching or doing needlework or watching old movies with her husband. As a part-time farm woman, Shirley spends some of her moments with her chickens, her dogs, and her cats. Colorful story of love, duty, and faith choices

The second son of an ailing British viscount, Sir Geoffrey Wentworth has a mission and a deadline—find an American bride worthy to share his title or return to England and marry his father's choice. On the eve of his return home, Sir Geoffrey despairs of finding a suitable match until a beautiful woman enchants him at a lavish San Francisco banquet but disappears before he can press her acquaintance. Then Fate takes a hand. The famous earthquake of 1906 unexpectedly throws Sir Geoffrey and the mysterious lady together, revealing secrets about each other and forcing them to work side by side amid the community's devastation, gradually forging a love between them that neither can admit or pursue.
Shirley Kiger Connolly has captured turn-of-the-century romance against the colorful backdrop of old San Francisco and the earthquake that forever changed its landscape. I appreciated her obvious research and innovative viewpoint in describing the event not from within the city itself but from neighboring communities across the bay. Lively characters, thwarted romantic encounters, and persistent intrigue kept me turning pages and rooting for these stubborn, endearing lovers until their final secret was revealed.

I thoroughly enjoyed “Not Quite an Angel”

Daphne Jordan, soon to enter an arranged marriage, leads a privileged life in a wealthy household. She leaves Virginia to visit her minister brother in California. She will make a chaperoned voyage to England, before her wedding vows.
She meets Prissy, a seventeen year old doing menial work in a newspaper office, who leads her on a deceptive adventure with the rich and famous in San Francisco. Daphne, speaking French, uses a fictitious title. She is seated next to Prissy’s perfect man, Sir Geoffrey Wentworth, at a banquet table in the Palace Hotel’s Tapestry Room.
Sir Geoffrey, 2nd son of Lord Wentworth, Viscount of Salisbury, dodges his own assumed betrothal waiting back in England, as he enjoys America. He brushes off attractive women from various walks of life, until Daphne is seated at his table.
She ignores his attempts to initiate conversation in his perfect French, disappearing before he can successfully draw her out.
The earthquake that shakes San Francisco the next morning, entangles them in a back and forth love story. Their romance eventually overflows the planks of the S.S. Wellington, as they and Daphne’s intended sail the Atlantic to England. During the voyage a legal document containing secret knowledge surfaces. If the document is valid, it has the power to change each of their destinies.
Author Shirley Kiger Connolly writes a good, light-hearted romance using historical accuracy and the terminology of the time. Her choice of words and phrases paints an accurate and vivid picture of what turn-of-the-century America was like.
I thoroughly enjoyed “Not Quite an Angel” and look forward to other work by this author.
I give this book an easy four for reading pleasure and historical accuracy.
